Your State of Mind is Surest Route to Success

What’s the best way to success in America?  I guess that depends upon whom you ask; but if you ask me, I would tell you to learn how to see what you’re after and you will find it.

What do I mean by that?  I simply mean that in order to be successful, you have to be able to recognize it when you see it.  That means taking your future and your success and into your own hands.  In a nutshell, I’m telling you to stop watching to the news and stop listening to people who tell you how bad things are in this country.

Why would I say that?  Does it mean I don’t care about what’s happening in the country?  Not at all.  I care a great deal about what happens in America and about other people; particularly about children.  But you must focus on what you want to achieve, in order to achieve it.

Success is a decision

That means that if you waste your time, your energy, your thoughts and your focus on things and events that you can’t control, then you won’t be successful.  How can you be?  Whatever you put into your mind affects what you think, how you think, and your mental outlook.  Focusing your time and mentality on the negatives doesn't do you any good.  To be successful, you need to have focus and a positive attitude.

When I say 'positive attitude' I’m not talking about some of those self-help programs that seek to remake your mental architecture—I’m not putting them down, either—that’s just not my topic at hand right now.  What I am talking about is the fact that if you listen to the media in this country, you will think that things are so bad out there that you won’t want to do anything!

Not only that, but a positive attitude is very important in business.  Remember, a positive attitude is crucial when you’re speaking with other people.  The plain fact is that the vast majority of businesses are built upon relationships.  People want to do business with other people who are not only smart, creative and hard workers, but who are also pleasant to be around, too.  Believe me when I tell you that no one wants to do business with a person who has a negative personality if they don’t have to.

Also, it’s important to listen to those people who can help you, who have been successful doing what you want to do.  Those are the people to cultivate relationship with, to seek their advice, and to learn from.  Do you see the difference?  Every person has the choice, more so than not, of who they associate with, of what they expose themselves to, of what they watch on television, and what information they read.   My point is that you want all of those things to lead you toward success and not negate your outlook, your efforts, or your confidence.

That is not to say that you should not be aware of what’s going in the world, but don’t let it rule your actions.  Obviously it is true that some areas of the country are having a tough time right now; there’s no doubt about it.  But that’s not true for every part of the country, nor is it true for every sector of the economy.  Even real estate, which is where my focus tends to be, is not doing poorly everywhere.  In many places, the market is actually quite healthy, and in others, it’s already on its way back.

There are always opportunities

What does this mean in practical terms? It means that you have options.  It means that there is opportunity out there.  And the truth is, there is always opportunity somewhere.  You don’t have to be a genius or a PhD to figure that out; in fact, most successful people are neither of those things.  But you do have to decide that you’re going to be successful and that you will do whatever it takes, legally and ethically of course, to get there.

Therefore, it is in your best interest to do what you can to see opportunities that you can actually afford and take advantage of.  Having said that, how you take advantage of an opportunity may take some creativity on your part.  If it takes you pooling some money together with a couple of friends to buy a business or an investment property, fine, so be it.  If it takes moving to a different state, like North Dakota or Texas, just to name a couple, then you can do that, too.

Lastly, it goes without saying that you cannot be afraid to take risks.  That doesn’t mean go out and bet all your money in Las Vegas. Rather, it means use your brain and calculate if you can afford the loss associated with the opportunity, as well as calculate your chances for success.  No venture is immune to failure; but if you surround yourself with smart people, assess the market place, and all the other factors, go into the deal with confidence.

And if you do fail?  What are your options?  Give up on life?  That’s not an option.  Your only real choices are to learn from the failure, don’t make the same mistake again, and then go forward and try again.   Until next time…

All the best.

George
